Keeper of the Lost Cities + Giveaway

I have an adorable friend. Her name is Shannon Messenger. Rewind two years back when I'd do local signings, and Shannon came. To all of them. Some of them had a lot of people. Some of them were at random times and had...like three. One of whom was always Shannon. We got to be friends, then she got a book deal, and then another book deal.

Shannon is the GIANT in the middle between the lovely Becca Fitzpatrick and some random super short girl. Shannon's so tall, guys. Like, almost halfway between five and six feet!

I'll admit it: when Shannon sold her books, I was pretty scared.

Because I really, really liked Shannon. And it's AWFUL when you really like someone but don't care for their books. And even worse when they've been so supportive of your books and you regularly meet up for lunch, etc etc.

GOOD NEWS: HER BOOKS ARE AWESOME.

This was a huge relief for me, and is nothing but exciting for you. I've already read her YA, LET THE SKY FALL, which will be out March of next year. (Yummy yummy, put it on your list.) I'm currently reading her middle grade novel, KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES, which is super fun and a great read for the younger set. (Think first Harry Potter book as far as reading level.) (Shannon, you are never getting away from Harry. Sorry. Every middle grade writer has the specter of Harry looming over them, just as every YA writer has to smile and nod that yes, their book is sort of like Twilight, in that it is a book that has characters who are teens.) (Though Shannon's book has the same fantastically written alternate world-within-our-own that is the best kind of adventure escapism as HP.)

Sophie is just like Harry! Only blond. And a girl. And not a wizard or witch. And actually not very much like Harry at all, but other than that: JUST LIKE HARRY!

If you live in Southern California, Shannon will be signing on Tuesday, October 2nd, 6:30 PM at the Oceanside Barnes and Noble. She is SO CUTE. So so so cute. Come and meet her and get a book signed.

If you don't live in Southern California, the good news is that I do! And I'll get a book signed and personalized for you. If you love fun adventures, get it for yourself! If you have an awesome tween on your Christmas list, get it for them! And read it first before wrapping it. I always do that. (I mean, umm, siblings who always get books for birthdays and Christmas, I never do that.)

To enter: leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite book that is JUST LIKE Harry Potter or Twilight (in other words, a book that is written for tween or teen readers but doesn't necessarily have anything else in common with HP or Twilight).

Rules: US residents only. (Sorry.) Must enter by leaving a comment by 12:00 PM Pacific, Monday, October 1st. Only one entry per person (though tweeting and blogging about the contest is always good karma for the Deities of Random Drawings).

Good luck!

I am soooo shaking my fist at the gods of scheduling for this! I almost always close on Tues *cries* and I know O'side so well too! If I weren't working I could visit with former coworkers, and rub elbows with amazing authors of amazingness...

Anywho, onto the actual commenting commentary: my current JUST LIKE Twilight book has got to be DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, because I swear, I lost time while reading it. Just poof, time was gone!

As for my JUST LIKE Harry Potter book, I'd say it still has to be MANDY, because no matter how many times I've read that book, or will end up reading it, it can still enthrall me each and every time I crack open the cover.

I'm so excited for Shannon. I was lucky she sent me an ARC to read for her interview with me and it was fantastic. I'd love to win.

There's no book totally like Harry Potter, even Shannon's. Sorry. One that is close is Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. I just got book 2 from the library. It's a good series. I never read Twilight so can't answer that one.

I'd love to win a copy of Shannon's book.

I loved Adaptation by Malinda Lo! edysicecreamlover18@gmailDOtcom Thank you for the giveaway!

A book that really reminded me of Twilight was Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. And nothing can compare to Harry Potter, no matter how hard you try. But this still looks pretty amazing. Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite JUST LIKE HARRY POTTER book is one that I fell in love with as a twelve year old card carrying library member: A PLAGUE OF SORCERERS by Mary Frances Zambreno.

This book sounds awesome. Thanks for the giveaway.

A couple favorite series like Harry, although not like Harry at all, is Artemis Fowl, and Percy Jackson.

Actually getting pretty sick of the like Twilight books. I'll stick with the like Harry books.

Jessy said...

That's a hard one... I don't think I've ever read a book like Harry. As for Twilight, I think Hush, Hush is very similar.

At the risk of sounding like a kiss-up, my favorite YA right now would have to be a tie between Paranormalcy/Supernaturally/Endlessly, and Anna and the French Kiss. I LOVE those book! :)

My current favorite book "like twilight" yet NOT AT ALL LIKE TWILIGHT, in the best possible way would have to be The Scorpio Races, and (I have to have two) The Daughter of Smoke and Bone (ok, crap, three) The Mortal Instrument series.
My fave forever and ever that's like Harry Potter, though not at all like Harry Potter and not even fantastical at all is the Anne of Green Gable series. I will love it forever.

I adore you (and this post had me laughing so incredibly hard!)

Clearly I'm not entering the contest, I'm just throwing off the count (Mwhahahaha) But I had to say thank you, and wow, I look like a giant in that photo. Remind me never to wear heels around you again!

So evil to ask a person what his or her favorite book is because "favorite" is superlative and therefore means ONLY ONE. But if someone were to ask me for a book recommendation right now, I would think back to the books I've read recently, and I would say THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is just like TWILIGHT, and THE GIRL WHO COULD FLY is just like HARRY POTTER. :)

Carol Holaday said...

Bit congrats to Shannon! Seeing your books in print is SO awesome and inspiring.

I'm so glad to live in a city with such talented and multi-sized authors! Size-wise I think I probably fall in between the Becca and Kiersten size categories. Watch out for me, as I may yet produce publishable fiction for teens and tweens myself.

On to the contest. I LOVE free books nearly as much as I love the people who write them (but not enough to e-steal, just to clarify).

The book I'd choose as my "Twilight" not-very-like-at-all is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margie Stohl. It's brilliant and I love it. Got to meet them both in Encinitas two year ago and had NO idea how much I would love their books. Wish I had a do-over on that . . . *smacks forehead repeatedly while imagining all the brain picking that could have taken place*

My choice for a "Harry Potter" not-so-alike-at-all is the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. Gotta love Artemis. He's so resourceful. In an evil kind of way.

Oooooh. I'm going with Vampire Academy!

A book I like that is JUST LIKE Twilight is Anna and the French Kiss. I mean, there's...people in it! A love story! Totally the same.

Jessie Clark said...

Yea for Shannon! Her book does look very good indeed. My favorite book written not for my age bracket is My Unfair Godmother by Janette Rallison. Thanks!

Katherine said...

This book looks all kinds of wonderful.
My favorite book (today. Who has just ONE favorite book?) would have to be Anna and the French Kiss. It's just like Harry Potter! This girl goes away to boarding school in a strange place, and meets new, quirky friends (JUST LIKE Harry Potter), and tries strange, delicious sounding foods, and has to learn complicated, puzzling things in class (JUST LIKE Harry Potter), and some people hate her right away, and she ends up getting detention, oh and sometimes she goes in huge ancient buildings that could almost be described as "castle like"...JUST LIKE HARRY POTTER OKAY. And well, anyone who's read them both can see the rest of the similarities themselves. They're practically the same book, really.

Hillary Reyna said...

My favorite books that are just like one of those is Vampire Academy/Bloodlines which I guess might relate to Twilight but I think it's anything but that. And I love Paranormalcy. I'm a recent fan of the series, but I just like how the book is written. The main characters for both are very relatable. Strong willed and heroines :) Those are my top, but the list could keep going.

Lauren said...

My favorite book that is just like Twilight is Evermore by Alyson Noel because it's... very similar to Twilight!

Laura Pauling said...

One of my recent favorite books is Under The Never Sky because it has a girl in it and she falls in love - just like Twilight!

Staci Murden said...

I adore Harry Potter. My two favorite tween books this year are Waterfall and My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century

Hannah said...

Well I've never READ twilight but I understand that a book like it is Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon. I enjoyed that one, but not TO DIE FOR.

However Harry Potter...I might have to say Percy Jackson... there are some very similar characteristics in that one.

CAN'T WAIT FOR Let The Sky Fall OR Keeper of the Lost Cities! YAY!

My FAVORITE JLHP book is called MARY TOTTER. She's a lizard but she doesn't know it at first.

...not many people have heard of it.

Sarah Hudson said...

I don't technically LIVE in the US, but my shipping address is in the US. Does that mean I count?

Anyway, I love Anna and the French Kiss, which is JUST like Twilight. There is kissing! And it rains a lot! And the author is named Stephanie! I'm pretty sure Meyers should sue for copyright violation.

I am so excited for Shannon!!!!

I'm going with The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead :D

My favorite book that's just like Twilight is The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart. In fact, it basically is Twilight. Minus the vampires and weak-willed heroine but plus feminism and imaginary neglected positives. Also a secret society.

Oh! Paper Pages said...

I am so excited to read Keeper of the Lost Cities. I live in OC and was hoping to make it out to the signing in Oceanside, but I have class that night. I loved the Vampire Academy series. I was so excited each time a new one was released. Thank you for the giveaway and for writing such an entertaining post! I might have snorted just now and my classmates are not amused - boring MBA students!

JG said...

There's too many good ones!! "Just like Twlight"-although not at all- is Daughter of S and B and just like HP is Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone. Although not at all. Thank you for doing this!

Angelica R. Jackson said...

The book that felt most like Twilight to me is Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. So much so, that I ended up not connecting with it at all. And yet I love Scorpio Races--probably one of my favorite books of all time.

Stephanie said...

My favorite teen read from this year was probably Shadow and Bone, I really liked it! This one sounds really fun too!

jpetroroy said...

I love Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series.

YAlover said...

Hmmmm let me see....book JUST LIKE Twilight has got to be Shiver because it's a book, the characters are teens, AND they are in love! I know, I know, it's so close, you'd think Maggie Stifvater wrote her book based off of Twilight!! ;). As far as Harry Potter goes, I'd have to say City of Bones by Cassandra Claire, because there are wizards in it, and they are teenagers. Again, scary close to Harry Potter but it was still a good book.... Hahahaha I love your contests so much! Thanks Kiersten! :)

Silverpool said...

Hmm...probably the Mortal Instruments for being like Harry Potter, and the Shiver series is a lot like Twilight. :) Thanks for the giveaway!! I'm crossing my fingers!

Amy said...

My favorite recently-read series that I couldn't put down was probably The Hunger Games trilogy. Paranormalcy/Supernaturally is probably a very close second.

Jessa said...

My favorite Twilight-esque book is probably Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. It has a love triangle, kissing, a teenaged heroine, and different species main characters! Bertie just lives in a magical theater and dyes her hair a lot.
As for Harry Potter-like... I love Rick Riordan's tween series; it's even better as a mythology fan.
I think I'll have to give my vote to Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, though. Kid finds out that they're part of a greater scheme (in this case, the elite Battle School instead of Hogwarts) and has to grow up quickly to meet that goal. I, especially, connect to Ender, as a gifted/talented student. Instead of being a soldier in the equivalent of 6th grade, I wrote a book... Not sure which of us is weirder.

Debbie Barr said...

Wahoo! I'm stoked to read this book, I will definitely be buying a copy if I don't win!

I read a great little book last year called "Peter Nimble," which is about a blind oprhaned thief who discovers some magic and uses it to escape his life as a thief. A FANTASTIC stand-alone middle grade full of magic, adventure, and great vocabulary. One of my favorite MGs last year.

Heido said...

A Series of Unfortunate Events is JUST LIKE Harry Potter. They are both series with 1 Baaaad guy and 3 Good young people.

Jessica Ring said...

My pick would be The Mortal Instruments series. It's hard to say though..

Felicia said...

Like some of the comments before me, I don't think that there is a book like Harry Potter or Twilight. Sorry. But a short series I enjoyed this year was Slammed and its sequel, Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover, which is a bit more mature in the young adult section.

Thanks for giving us a chance to enter the awesome giveaway :)

Llana said...

For HP-Percy Jackson series because it brings you those cozy memories of cinnamon pancakes ,fluffy blankets,Adele songs, reading in the clover patch, and most importantly childhood.
Twilight-Your books !!except for the fact that I like your books better.

Payton Thackery said...

My favorite book that is totally like Harry Potter is Ally Carter's Out of Sight, Out of Time. The Mortal Instruments comes in a close second, though.

I love SPECTRAL by Shannon Duffy - it's "just like Twilight" because it's YA and paranormal and there are two boys who are both in love with the main character... AND there's kissing!!

Seriously, I love this book! I'm not usually even a fan of paranormal romances, but this one I've read over-and-over, and it makes me smile every time :)

That is so cool of u to do giveaway. I have a big list of "just like" HP & T, here's a few I've read this month. Crave, Onyx, Outpost & Embrace. I like all f them for diff reasons. I love to put myself in the world the author has created. It's a beautiful excape!

Elise said...

Today, the book that is my favorite that is like Harry Potter, but not, is A Wrinkle in Time. I love Charles Wallace, Meg and Mrs. Who/What. :) Of course if this is one of those questions that requires a current book, I would go with the Percy Jackson books. My students eat those up a la Max from Where the Wild Things Are!

Ems said...

Ooh, Fablehaven!! My most favorite MG/Tween series EVER that is JUST LIKE HARRY only not. :)

Congrats to your pal!

Shannon's book sounds fantastic! And EXACTLY but NOT AT ALL like Harry Potter!!

My favorite book that is SO Twilight except not at all like Twilight is....holy crap this is hard....Anna and the French Kiss. Which is basically only like Twilight in that there are characters and there is kissing and people talk to each other in it.
