Isadora

So, I'm still not going to give you any information about Isadora, other than what I've already said. It's about a girl. She's sixteen. There are magical elements, but it's a modern setting. However, in honor of hitting 50 pages, I pulled together some images that have to do with the book...see if you can figure it out!

Drat. I've completely given away the plot now, haven't I? Go ahead and tell me what it's about in the comments section.

Brett lost himself in the taste of her lips as the salty wind whipped around them, but Isadora suddenly pulled away from him with a sharp cry. "Oh, no. No. You didn't tell me--"

"What?" Brett wrung his sailor's hat in his hands and scanned the dock.

Isadora shook her head and pointed frantically at him while she tried to collect the words. Waves slapped at the dock's supports. "You're the one. The Caller."

Brett's eyes widened. He forced them shut, but it was too late. She'd seen his reaction.

"I should've known from your palm tree tattoo. Only the bearer of the mark has the power to call--"

"Call the hippos down from the stars," he finished. He threw his hat on the dock. "You think I don't have that stupid prophecy memorized? I haven't heard it parroted at me for the past fifteen years? If I could--"

But Isadora was already running down the docks, toward the lighthouse tower. "I just can't," she sobbed as she ran. "I'm deathly afraid of hippos."

Girl from outer space who poses as a hotel maid in a Mexican resort where hippos roam unsupervised and people fall down the stairs while kissing handsome sailers. BOOYAH.

OH NO HOW DID YOU KNOW. It's like you were writing straight from my head, Bohemienne!

(HAHAHAHAHAHAH. Perfect!)

Anne--That's pretty much my cover letter right there.

Hmm, I'd say it's set at the beach and Isadora can control trees. She's trying to build a stairway to space with the help of her were-hippo friends so that she can retrieve the shiny silver ball thing.

Did I get it?

Whatever it is, it sounds awesome.

PS, did anyone look at the hippos and for a split second think, "There are naked people on those rocks!" No? Huh.

Uhm... Isadora is really an alien who came to earth because her rocket lost oil (it now stands in the countryside looking suspiciously like a tower). She now wants to be an interior decorator. She wants to find love, but her sweetheart wants to join the navy. Doesn't even give her proper flowers and leaves her to walk up the steps all by herself. She's also constantly looking for her roots...stumbling over hippos...right into the sunset.

Also, my goddaughter is called Isadora, lol.

hehehe, I love being in the know. :)

It's just after a victory in war, and Isadora is helping to colonize new planet. Shes an interior designer. There are dangerous hippo-like aliens and sentient trees with killer roots on this planet. Isadora wants to explore, she wants to keep walking until she finds the place where the sun meets the horizon. And surely there's a boy and some kissing in there somewhere.

Whatever it is, I hope it sells so I can read it! :)

Well, there's something to do with a palantir, which I think is pretty cool. And then there's a jungle, which is also awesome, and hippos, which are just epic. So it could be about a 16 year old girl who lives in the jungle and watches hippos through a palantir. Something like that. :)

Isadora feels small in the grand scheme of things (hence the universe), but then something happens to burst her bubble of security and she flees to an unfamiliar place that appears to be big on steeples. After all this, she feels she cannot stay in one place or the thing that scared her so much in the first place will find her (the picture with lots of bedrooms makes me think this) and then there’s a very pivotal scene in her relationship with a boy (the huge statues kind of gave that away, haha) Don’t ask me where this boy comes into the plot, I’m working with random pictures here!.
You’ve lost me with the picture of the garden, but maybe it’s hinting that Isadora ends up without a home and has to fend for herself in the wilderness. Then the stairs could mean her powers (whatever they are) are causing her to descend into darkness, and leading onto the next picture (tree roots) Isadora might have to investigate her family tree to determine whether she is who she really thinks she is.
Uh… the Hippos. Well, they look pretty content amongst each other, so maybe Isadora realises she has found people she can trust.
As for the sunset, I think it symbolises the end of her trauma, much as it symbolises the end of the day.

I feel like I'd have it if I could only figure out what was in the reflection on the oil bubble.

Leigh said...

Well, now I have it all figured out. Is there any point in even reading it now? Thanks a lot, Kiersten,or Bubble-burster, as I'm going to think of you from here on out!

Ciara Glynn said...

It's clearly about an alien who lives on earth, hotel-hops and dreams of becoming a ballerina, only to be mesmerized by a palm tree while walking down red stairs, at which point she falls and breaks her leg, only to meet a tree nymph who teahcers her The Way of the Hippo, and she falls in love with him, he cures her and then they dance on a bridge at the beach...
Clearly. What other story could these pictures possibly depict? What's that you say? Any other one?
Well then.

Wendy said...

Renee-- that was just cruel.

Kiersten-- I have no clue. At first I was thinking, "Space... images in a bubble... I'm guessing Isadora is magical somehow." Then I scroll down more... "Setting? Ok, interior design..." and then there were suddenly HIPPOS. So now I have no idea. But it sounds really epic. Like, really epic. I mean, you can't go wrong with hippos.

Jessie said...

So, she hangs out in Balboa Park with a bunch of hippos she's freed from the zoo...but they're really hippos from outer space (who love interior design). Their spaceship crashed in a tar pit (hence the bubble photo), and they got captured by well-meaning zoo keepers.

...And then they all go to the beach?

Kathryn Packer Roberts said...

So, the stars are in alignment, ready for the semi-bicentennial oil spill in small town-wherever (where the hippos live). Boy meets girl, they kiss, and live happily ever after traveling around the world. Sounds like a blockbuster to me. =)

Kathryn Packer Roberts said...

Oh yeah, and somewhere along the way they save the hippos from the stair-climbing champion who wants to dump the oil in their pond, so this is all very earth-friendly.

Ciara Glynn said...

@Kathry, methinks you're on to something there...

Tracey Neithercott said...

I'm surprised you gave away so much! It's obviously about a girl from another planet who's only clue as to when she came to Earth is a magic orb. So she starts a new life in a tropical location, awaiting further instructions.

She lives in an old church with lots of rooms all to herself. To get to her bedroom, she goes up a flight of red stairs--the same stairs that show up in her dreams.

One day, while walking through a nearby park, she sees a tree lift its roots from the earth. It starts chasing her and she has no other choice but to jump into a pond full of hippos. The tree runs right past her, so she pulls herself out and walks to the dock.

It was sunset. A cute sailor walked by and whispered in her ear. "You smell like a hippopotamus's behind." Before she could tell him that the entire pond stunk, he dipped her and kissed her. The end.

Well I guess I'm not reading this new book now that I KNOW EVERYTHING. :)

I have no idea, but this is fun!

Sara Baker said...

I love that I see Balboa Park! I hope that there is a scene there.

Katrina L. Lantz said...

Oh, no. I'm not even going to try. :) Everyone's ideas are so fun to read, though! And it looks like whatever it is, it'll be awesome. I sure hope that tree with the epic roots is something special. And that the hippos don't eat anybody. I'm also deathly afraid of hippos. Isadora and I have that in common.

Kristi said...

It's so obvious, I think it needs no words. I mean, really? Way to give it all away! ;P

Anonymous said...

So there will be a hippo on the beach that swallow you and takes all over the world, space, and time. Sounds pretty awesome.

meredith-rose said...

It's all about the Hippos. In space. In a bubble space-ship. With fancy hotels and gardens, sailors, and sunsets. *nods* I think I'm on to it.

Kiersten White said...

You are all plotting GENIUSES. I am so impressed.

And entertained. And delighted. But--have any of you looked closely at the picture of the sailor and the woman kissing? Perhaps around their feet?

Daisy Whitney said...

She's tiny. They're giant. She's a miniature schnauzer. Wait, a mini pinscher? Who likes to kiss a lot! Near palm trees! Because she lives in a bubble!

Kiersten White said...

Sometimes a statue is just a statue.

But sometimes hippos are much more than hippos.

Brianna Hart said...

This is soooo obvious...

A 16- year old space cadet lives in a super cool old building that is now modernized inside. Her and her boyfriend dressed up like the time square couple...then they went on spring break together and everything was great until she fell down the stairs and her boyfriend laughed at her, so she ran outside and cried by a really cool tree that faced a beach of hippos. She vented to the hippos and decided that she would forgive her insensitive boyfriend for laughing at her. BAM!

Kate H said...

Ooh ooh! A female demon called Ammut had the tail end of a hippo!
So maybe Isadora is a demon huntress. And also, the statue could symbolise a love 'set in stone' so it could be some sort of prophecy.

Another also: That really long anonymous comment up there... that was me...

Liesl said...

A society of people who worship stars and other shiny objects and live in high buildings or tree houses because of the mad hippos who are attracted to the scent of human flesh. The kissing couple is just about to be attacked. Moral of the story: Kissing can cause DEATH!

OMG YOU GUYZ THIS IS SO OBVIOUS:

The name Isadora probably has some special hidden meaning... *goes to babynames.com*

AHA! Isadora- Gift of Isis. Isis is the Egyptian goddess of fertility. Also goddess of the moon. Those first two images are related to that. The third picture reminds me of India...

And the pictures of all the rooms are hinting that Isadora lives in a giant house... or something, RIGHT?!?!

This random midget in the next picture is a “guide” of some sorts to Isa. The midget is maybe telling Isa that dating the sailor dude would result in a forbidden romance. They live near a jungle or need to go there to complete a quest of sorts.

The midget’s name is Dr. Zuckerman because that is the most amazing name evarrrrr.

The hippos are there because everyone harbors a secret desire to pet a hippo. Just a tiny bit. You know it’s true.

(So, you are all amazed at my amazing powers of book prementation. I know it :)

Isadora is t a pseudonym, because this story is totally autobiographical.

It's about a "vertically challenged" person from outer space who becomes LDS and serves a mission in Africa.

Gosh, I have no idea. However, I cannot wait to read it! Though I am first time commenter, I am a huge fan of your book and blog. It was, in fact, my failure of a blog, which has a similar name, that led me to the wonder that is yours. Anyway, here is my attempt at a plot for your book:

Born in [insert exotic location here], sixteen-year old Isadora was always different. But she never knew how, until a godess showed up at her door.

Now, Isadora is thrown into a race of mystical star-loving people, a midget mentor who talks like Yoda, a giant penthouse apartment, and an ancient war between good... and hippos. At least Isadora likes the penthouse.

Sorry about the fail summary... and plot speculation. But great blog, and please, please keep it up.

I'm sure whatever I say has already been said. So I'll just say that I love the name Isadora and the hippos really threw me. However, sometimes when I eat a lot of cookie dough I kind of feel like a hippo. Maybe that's Isadora's problem, too.

Hm, I take it the book is set in San Diego? Isadora is an interior decorator for the offices of an off-shore oil rig. They are constantly changing their office decor, those silly oil workers. She has a pet hippo that she visits at SeaWorld, where she volunteers on weekends. She lives in an underground apartment beneath the tree roots and has to climb down a red staircase to get to the main level. One day as she's riding a boat to the oil rig, a sailor in a passing boat locks eyes with her. Without thinking, they both jump off their boats and swim to each other. Then they take a vacation to a space museum and activate an old spaceship, launching themselves into outer space and to a happily ever after.

Woo, I so NAILED it!

Isadora was a normal teen with a mania for interior decorating and, well, boys. But on a night of a weird meteor, one lands on earth and imbues her with magical power somehow as well as the ability to travel through time and space. She's given a mission: to save a hot boy in her hometown (in her school naturally) who is the key to every secret in the universe. He's a time traveler too, only he doesn't know it, because he does it in his sleep. She has to find him and stop him from doing something stupid.

Here's where the hippos come in. His parents are scientists sworn to protect hippos. So, they're off researching hippos in a country in Africa and take their reluctant son for two weeks. By this point he has met Isadora and thinks she's weird but adorable. Isadora tracks him down, convinced that something terrible will happen. Somehow they both wind up back in time (1945) and will later travel to San Diego where the climactic battle between good and evil takes place.

Allison said...

I guess Isadora is a princess(haha) by the sea, in a tropical location, but all the basings of her now society were based on astrology(or she came from a dif. planet) and there is some kind of conflict(probably with the hippos) which she tries to solve, getting kissed by sailors in the process. :)
The End! <3

“What’s your story Isadora? I mean what happened before you met me?” Kara asked.
“Mum asked me before she died to look into her glass ball and make a wish. I asked to be a witch and I got sent to a school for odd balls. Sort of like Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, except it wasn’t as cool. Or fun. Obviously I did a spell wrong on my first day and ended up –“
“Here?” Kara said.
“Oh no, that comes way later. The spell turned me into a tree, I was a tiny tree, but then again I am tiny.”
“Not anymore”
“You’re one to speak. Anyway, as I was saying… I spent some time in that school before I decided it wasn’t for me. NOT the smartest choice I made. I couldn’t find a decent house to live in, and Dad wouldn’t take me back since he found out I was a witch.-“
“He should see you now, he’d take you back instantly”
“Are going to continue being this rude or will you let me finish?!”
“Go on”
“So I went to a club to celebrate my stupidity, got drunk and fell down some stairs. Next morning I find myself asleep next to this HUGE tree and I don’t know why but I decided to climb it. It was massive and when I reached to top I saw a giant sailor kissing a giant woman.”
“I thought your name was Isadora, not Jack”
“And this wasn’t a beanstalk, get with it! I had to tip-toe past the giants and when I reached this swamp I saw my mother’s glass ball! I started to reach for it, that’s when this hippo jumped out and bite me on the arm. Next thing I know, I’m a hippo too.”
“Sorry about that”
“I’ll never forgive you. I'm not even a hippo, I'm like a GIANT hippo. In the sky.”
“Hey, don’t blame me, blame Ms. White for making us into blood sucking hippos.”
“She sounds so innocent…”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. And look at me now.”

- Hehe! Hope you didn't mind being part of the story! :D
