So I noticed on Kiersten's Paranormalcy count down widget, that today is officially 100 days until the world gets to meet Evie! I cannot tell you how excited I am about that, and I thought I'd tell you all a little bit about how I met Evie for the first time.
Because, well, I did meet her first. (And yes, I'm totally bragging.)
It happened early in January 2009. I'd just started writing Relax, I'm a Ninja, since I won a certain contest and thought maybe I should write the whole book. Kiersten had just gone out for her first time on submission. She was bored. She needed a good distraction. That, and she needed to trade chapters with me. We do that pretty often as we rough draft.
Here are a few lines of our chat from that day:
Kiersten: I know it's not the most original idea
but I think I can do it funny/exciting/clever
we've got a lot of endangered species in the world
Natalie: fresh takes--there are no new ideas:)
Kiersten: vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, swamp things
(I KNOW--vampires)
(but they aren't main characters)
Natalie: :)
Kiersten: I know
Natalie: :)
Kiersten: I know
I gotta get a name for her, quick
Natalie: I love seeing what you come up with
Natalie: I love seeing what you come up with
because they are names I never think of
Kiersten: well they aren't unusual ever
Natalie: no
that's what I enjoy
Kiersten: right now it's Laura, Hazel, or Violet. Ooh, or Evelyn. Evie, I've always liked that
Kiersten: right now it's Laura, Hazel, or Violet. Ooh, or Evelyn. Evie, I've always liked that
I think her name is Evie
Natalie: Perfect
Kiersten: he he, I'm going to send you the first page
Kiersten: he he, I'm going to send you the first page
Natalie: sweet
***
Natalie: lol
***
Natalie: lol
yeahthis will be awesome
Kiersten: okay, you like it? he he
Kiersten, thanks for letting me tag along for the ride. In just 100 little days I'll be the first person at my local bookstore, talking you up to everyone I see.
Kiersten: okay, you like it? he he
Natalie: oh yeah
Kiersten: good good
Natalie: I can tell Evie's my kind of girl
Looks pretty simple, doesn't it? One day. One idea. And in 100 days that little bud of a story will be a real live book. I feel so privileged that I got to see Evie grow every step of the way—watching all this happen to my dearest friend has been incredible and inspiring.Natalie: I can tell Evie's my kind of girl
Kiersten: yeah, you'll like her

That's pretty awesome, and I can't wait for the book either! Wheee! :)
A to the W to the E to the SOME! The birth of Evie. I loves it.
What a sweet story! Now, clear me up here. Are you guys really sisters, or are you like sistahs? (Hard to tell fact from fiction on a blog that oozes such funniness on a regular basis. :-)
I'm very excited about Paranormalcy, and hope I get a chance to read Relax, I'm a Ninja someday, too. If you are sisters, WOW. That's one talented gene pool.
NOT sisters. Just unbiological twins...born seven months apart...attended the same high school but never spoke to each other. Deep Stuff like that. She's the smart, witty one. I'm the one with...yeah (inside joke).
Aww! BFF's with a Pride and Prejudice kind of start. I love it!
Thanks for the answer. It is awesome that you are both breaking into publication around the same time, just like your close birthdays. Magic.
And by "breaking into publication" I do not mean to imply you are doing anything illegal.
*goes back to the thesaurus, mutters about crappy word choice*
So cool! 100 days to go! I'm excited... I can't imagine how excited Kiersten will be though! Imagine!!!
You two are amazing. Really. And that's a great start for Evie. I can't wait until it comes out. I'm getting PARANORMALCY as my birthday present to myself. :)
