Various and Sundry

My three-year-old son has reverted (sleepwise) to a newborn.

Well, not his newborn stage (which was beyond a nightmare), but a nicer baby's newborn stage. I'm feeling more than a little bitter. If I can't have an actual new baby, I certainly don't want my preschooler acting like one. My sister gets more sleep with her five-month-old, which is just wrong.

On the bright side, Editor Erica loved my edits! Sometimes I go back and reread her emails because they give me warm fuzzies. So, for those of you who are curious, what happens now is that she's dropped off my manuscript to the copy editors (who edit for things like commas and capitalizations, the nitty gritties), and after they're done she's going to do another round of very light line edits (because, as she puts it, I'm a remarkably clean writer) (yes, you can picture me beaming over that compliment). And then that's it for us as far as editing, besides reading galleys and other versions to check for typos, etc. I know sometimes after an edit there will be another, shorter editorial letter and another round, and maybe even a third, but part of the reason they put me on a fast track for publication was because Erica didn't feel like there was much that needed to be done with Paranormalcy.

Whew. Good thing, too, because my brain is not exactly functioning at full power these days. Pardon me while I direct a glare at my son. Okay, that done, I'm going to apologize if you've written me an email and I haven't responded, and promise that I will soon. I'm also trying to put together a FAQ for my website, so if you have anything you think should be included, let me know.

And now I vote that we all go right back to bed for a few hours. Who's with me?

That's very exciting! Sorry about the lack of sleep, but I'm totally stoked for you about your book moving so quickly through the process! Congrats again! Now go nap while you might be able to!

I am soooo with you on going back to bed! Mondays are so hard! That is awesome that your done with edits all ready. What a compliment that the novel is so good they don't see much to improve. In my head my novel will be the same way.ha

What a compliment, to have to not do much with your book because it is already so clean! So you don't rewrite your manuscript, your agent isn't an editing agent, and your editor thinks there is little to be done. Basically it must come out brilliant the first time around. That's great. Hope you get some sleep. I just threatened my three year-old with a spanking if he didn't nap. Not very nice but it worked.

That's awesome that you don't have to have a lot of editing! I can imagine how good it felt to hear that! =)

And I second that going back to bed vote!! xD lol

*raises hand groggily* It's so time for a serious nap.

Congrats.

I wish I were half as funny as you when I'm sleep deprived.

I vote for going to bed. Sleep is good.

You guys are all too nice. Keep in mind that I edited Paranormalcy at least seven times before Erica ever saw it--cut ten thousand words, did several line edits, etc. It DEFINITELY didn't come out perfect the first time through : )

I wish I could go to bed...nothing short of a miracle will make Dojo go to sleep. Ah well. You all nap for me, okay?

Exciting about the edits!! Hope you are able to get some sleep!

Ah, darn it. No nap? That just stinks! If i could nap for you, I would. I'd pass any sleep benefits I got on to you.

Yeah, don't you wish we could employ surrogate nappers?

My three-year-old is doing the same thing. I stay up until midnight writing, then get up 3-5 times during the night, and usually have at least one child screaming for me at 7.

This really ain't working for me. I wish I could just let him cry it out, but that seems really unkind for a 3-year-old (and he'd wake my 1-year-old).

Woot on having a clean MS, though! (I'm a little confused, though. Shouldn't most MSs be pretty clean by the time they get to this stage? That's a little disappointing if they're not.)

Yay for clean writing! I love that you are letting us all read this process. It is so interesting.

I'd be all for surrogate nappers. Think of how much work we could all get done if we didn't have to sleep and could just have someone else do that for us.

so funny!

I reread good emails for the warm fuzzies, too.

I'm with ya, Kiersten. "our" alarm goes off at 5:15 AM bc my husband has to be at work at 6:30, whereas my second graders don't troop into the room till 7:45...

That must be the coolest compliment ever to a writer---that your writing is so clean and tight that it doesn't need the triple bypass style reworking that most people probably have to go through.

As I say to the little people... "Pat yourself on the back for being a star!"

I'm so with you on going back to bed. Early morning seminary is killing me. I'm a night person and this getting up in the 5s is evil. I note the irony every morning.

Congrats on being such a "clean" writer. Editors will always love you and not just because you smell nice.

A nap? Wait, I almost remember what that word means. It's on the tip of my tongue in the foggy parts of my memory.....

No. Can't remember. Maybe someday.

Sorry about the lack of sleep. It does get easier.
In a couple of years, Dojo will be at school and you'll have the house to yourself. Just think of all the nana naps you'll get then!
*mwah!*

ps, gotta love those editing letters. They are the best!

I was going to make some kind of relevant comment, but I'm too stunned by the fact that I apparently wasn't following your blog before this very moment. Wow. I'm a big boobie.

Wow. I imagine that editors do NOT throw around phrases like "remarkably clean writer" unless you are in fact a superstar. Congrats!

I'm up for a nap! I'm glad the edits went well, and I hope you get the sleep schedule back on track.
