Excuses, Excuses, and a Winner

I'm sorry for the lack of poetry yesterday. It ended up taking me all day to tally the votes on the picture.

Just kidding. But there were a lot.

Really what happened is that I planned and booked a trip to New York! Yay! I've never been and I'm very, very excited. Plus, I get to spend one of the afternoons with Agent Michelle and Editor Erica, who, as you have no doubt learned from this blog, are two of the most singularly awesome people on the planet.

So that is why I suck and reneged on my promise to post poetry yesterday. To make up for it, I'll write two poems right now, when I really ought to be taking a shower. See how devoted I am to you?

(As suggested by Renee, who has been asking me to write one about whales for months.)

Whales

While they are quite majestic
they just aren't too poetic
Blubber, fins, and tail
That's what makes a whale
And yes, this poem's pathetic.

(Sorry, Ren, I really do like whales--but all I can think about is the story my husband tells of when he was a young boy and a whale carcass washed up on the beach and the stench was so overwhelming you could taste it. Which doesn't lend itself well to poetic adulation.)

And for Anita, Rainy Mondays:

Rainy days and Mondays
always get her down
and when they come together
they're sure to make her frown.
But me, I'm rather jealous
I'd like some rain 'round here
So next time it starts raining
Fed-Ex me some, my dear.

Alright. Now that those are out of the way, I'm going to announce the winner of the photo contest, which will no doubt be SHOCKING.

SHOCKING, I tell you.

In last place we have picture four, with 22 votes
In third place we have picture three, with 23 votes
In second place we have picture one, with 32 votes
And far and away the winner is two, with 51 votes

What was interesting about your comments (besides the fact that you are all way, way too nice to me and wildly flattering) was that everyone who has taken photographs professionally disagreed on which was the best photo. And none of the professionals chose number two, even though that one was the clear favorite. (Now you are questioning my math [which is entirely justified because, once again, bane of my existence], but there were 102 comments left, so obviously I counted all votes, including those of the wafflers who put in two choices. So in reality, half of the voters liked two the best.)

I have no point to that analysis. I just thought it was interesting. But number two it is! Unless someone at Harper disagrees, in which case, you can still say you helped choose my author photo, because you totally did.

I'm not sure how to wrap this rambling post up. So, hey! I'm going to New York in a month! Dance with me in the comments.

I'm so jealous you get to go to New York! I love that place. I've been twice. I went to an author signing at this great little bookshop in Greenwich Village called Partners and Crime. If it's your first time in NY you should definitely get on one of the tours that go through the city. There are certain companies that will sell you a ticket to the bus that allows you to get off whenever you want and just hop on the next bus that comes by there. Meaning you're not limited to a strict schedule. (Boston does this too. It's fabulous.)

How long will you be there?

Happy Dance Happy Dance!

Why are you going to NYC? For how long? What for? You can't announce a giant cross-country trip like that without answering a million more questions, right? ;o)

I am satisfied.

Also, New York!!!! SO exciting! I've been there twice, and both times I've been completely swept away by it. There's so much going on! So many colors, sounds, smells—it's amazing. And, I can only imagine how fantastic it would be to tag a meeting with agent and editor onto that. :)

Thank you for the rainy day poem! It's been raining non-stop in Alabama for like...well forever. I'll see if I can convince some of it to go your way.
Enjoy your trip to NYC =)

Okay, okay, details: I am going toward the end of October, for three days. I've never been to New York before and am very excited (and glad my mom and sister are coming along).

Part of why I am going is because I wanted to meet my FABULOUS agent and AMAZING editor and the rest of the AWESOME team (yes, these people deserve all caps) at HarperTeen. And then the rest is just a trip with two of my favorite girls to celebrate this incredible thing that is happening to me : )

Wow! I finally won! I didn't really look at the pictures from the photographer's point of view... I judged based on what I'd like to see looking out of the jacket at me when I selecting a book to purchase. I guess there's a big difference.

So, since I picked the winner, do I get to go to NY with you? ;)

Try to see Wicked if you can. One tip is to go the night of the show and ask if they've got any unsold tickets. (Go like right before they're going to open the doors.) If they do, they'll sell the tickets for a discount just to get them sold. Wicked is pretty popular so you might not luck out, but I've heard that Broadway is really struggling so you might swing it.

Phantom of the Opera is good too.

So is Mary Poppins.

I am sooo dancing in my head but must remain composed as I am at work. Co-workers still not over swoon from when you were offered deal with HarperTeen.

I am very happy that pic number two was the winner.
How exciting to go to New York and be there because your an AUTHOR.

"Two of the most singularly awesome"? What? Honestly, Kiersten.

I forgive you only because you're going to New York and obviously distracted.

Sounds like high adventures are in the offing...

Natalie, I stand by my two of the most singularly awesome.

I know it doesn't make sense. I knew it didn't when I wrote it. I don't care.

But I forgive you only because your profile pictures are all so hot now.

And thanks, everyone! NWA, I actually just saw Wicked. We might try to go to a show but my sister is bringing her baby. I'm just excited to go to the museums!

My 2-year old (Kate) and I put on dancing music (Backyardigans) and celebrated. Almost as fun as New York City!!

I went there for the first time last fall with a good friend and blogged about all the food I ate, which I highly recommend you schedule before going.

The most important place in all of New York City to go, though, is Jacques Torres' chocolate shop on Amsterdam between 73rd and 74th. The hot chocolate is so good, and I loved the mendients and pastry. Plus that part of NYC is so beautiful. It's amazing getting off the subway there...breathtaking, and I'm not a city girl!

Have fun, and enjoy meeting everyone in person and celebrating!

I think I'd be scared to go to NY alone because I hate doing new things and new places alone. However, it does sound like an awesome adventure.

Isn't Wicked so amazing?

Museums are definitely worth checking out. The Met was amazing! But I was there with a non-musuem-lover so I didn't get to spend as much time there as I wanted.

Times Square is so much fun. It should be awesome now that they've banned cars from it. Don't bypass the M&Ms Store if you're a chocolate lover. Just be careful with whatever souvenirs you bring home because they might break in your suitcase.

I'm doin' some booty shakin' over here!

I voted for number two because it reminded me of how sweet and funny you are, but picture number one was definitely the more artistic one.

This waffler is doing the polka. Have fun in New York. :)

I forgot the chocolate chip cookies! The chocolate chip cookies are the big reason to go to Jacques Torres. And buy, like, 15 of them to bring home and give away. Or freeze and eat later. :)

I'm doing Thriller--amazingly, of course.

which picture did the photographers pick?

Yay! You get to go to NYC!!!!

Congratulations!!!!

I went last fall on a little trip I won and here's my advice:

Go to the Met. Even if it is for an hour. See Madame X by John Singer Sargent, sillouhetted (I canNOT spell today) in the arched doorway. Perfect.

Enjoy....

And whichever picture you select, you're gorgeous and deserve all your success!

Way too late, but option 4 has the sharpest focus on your features. Plus I love the brick wall for a YA author.
