Testing, Testing, One Two Three

I thought I'd try out writing a scene from my new book. Man, there's nothing like the new idea thrill--figuring out the plot, fleshing out characters, creating the world you'll spend the next sixty- or seventy-thousand words in. Fun, fun stuff. This is an experimental scene from my as-yet-unnamed book, which I am currently--and creatively--referring to as...Unnamed.

Liz stood facing the stall, hands firmly on her hips. "No, you may not take the horses out tonight. I don't care if you want to. I don't care if they want to! We've got an early morning group coming tomorrow, and I won't have time to brush all of the knots out of their manes. I said no!" Her shoulders dropped, and she gave an exasperated sigh. "Oh, don't be like that. Come on, I'll give you extra milk--warm, with cinnamon in it!"

She jumped as she heard a voice from the stable doors. "Um, Beth? Who are you talking to?"

Oh crap, she thought. Sam. Her face was totaly blank as she looked into his curious eyes. After a moment's pause, she scowled deliberately. "Who do you think I'm talking to, dork?" She cringed slightly when his face fell. Stupid, she chided herself. Why'd you have to call him that, of all things?

He stood up straighter, setting his jaw. This was new--usually he shied away from confrontation. "I don't know; maybe you still have your little imaginary friends."

Liz was about to reply when she felt a sharp poke in her shoulder. "Ouch!" she cried.

Sam looked confused, then lowered his eyes. "I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings."

"No, it's not that," she replied, when they jabbed her again, even harder. "Stop it!" she yelled, turning toward the horse's stall. "Fine!"

She turned back to Sam, who was clearly starting to worry. Rolling her eyes, she said, "Not imaginary. Just mythological." Shaking her head, she muttered, "Happy now?" out of the side of her mouth.

"What are you talking about?" Sam asked, raising his eyebrows skeptically.

Liz looked at him, then cocked her head to the side. "Hey! You're not wearing your glasses!" she said, noticing for the first time. Funny, she had never realized what thick eyelashes he had around his large brown eyes. Maybe she only noticed now because he was blinking so slowly, trying to follow her string of nonsense. Stupid pixies, she thought. Rapid subject change was her only way out now. "Hey, let's go make some hot chocolate, okay?" She smiled cheerfully at Sam, who still seemed dubious, but shrugged and turned to go back to the house. As soon as he was leaving, Liz quickly leaned back into the stall. "No riding tonight, guys, I mean it!" she hissed, then hurried after Sam, hoping he wouldn't bring this up again.

Thank you, FH! It's sure fun to write it. I don't think I'll be able to wait until November though...

This is definitely something I would read!

I'm SO happy you have a new project to be excited over. Keep going:)

OOOH, I like, I like. I am definitely intrigued and want to find out what happens! Where do you come up with all these great ideas? That's usually my problem.

give us more. give us more!

Kristina, some day I will make you. And you can take a photo kissing one of my books, okay? I'll pay you.

Definitely, Natalie ; )

Meg, I was in an idea drought for a long time. Yesterday I decided to come up with an idea, so Natalie was asking me what kind of idea I wanted to write. High school. Modern times. Twist on reality. Pixies. Bam, there you go, it all took off from there! And now it's a fun, fun thing to think about!

Rychelle, I can't! Right now I'm just plotting and doing character sketches. That was a random scene I had in my head. It did help me figure out some more things about my brand of pixies though.

Long lashes and chocolate brown eyes......

Hmmm. I'm thinkin' the possibilities are looking good.

Invisible mythical creatures are very exciting with great potential for high jinks and fun! I'd say the test is a rip roaring success.

PIXIES!

I love pixies, and this blurb.

Have you read Pixie Warrior?

Kayleigh said...

Haha, I like it. Pixies are rad.

Kiersten said...

He he, thanks, Janey. The possibilities are buzzing through my head like a swarm of...pixies ; )

Thanks, Anthony! I have not, and I am hereby avoiding any books with pixies or fairies or anything of the sort, to avoid contamination (or inadvertant copycatting).

Thanks, Kayleigh ; ) And the great thing about pixies is the mythology is pretty blurry, which leaves me very open to invent my own--sticking to the roots, of course.

Cool, we're both in New Ideaville together. It really is a great place, isn't it? So diverting. And so full of possibilities. :)

I like what you've got here, though I confess that I will have to go google pixies, as I am not entirely sure what they are. Kinda like fairies, right? No? Yes?

Anyway, cool stuff.

Kiersten said...

Alas, Renee, they'd probably knock a bucket over on your head for saying that! They are not like fairies.

At least, in my book ; )

New Ideaville is way fun!

Pixie mythology is pretty muddled, but there are some interesting things there. When I have my mythology all set, I'll share it with you guys.

Kayleigh said...

That's so true (about the very blurry pixie mythology). That really does leave you a lot of creative liberty. If you don't mind my asking...will they be kind of like a Tinker Bell sort of pixie, or will you recreate them all together? (if you don't really want to give that away...that's totally cool)

I love pixy stix! I haven't had one in years though.
I like this story so far, you're so talented Kiersten. I've already given up on my book.

Kiersten said...

Kayleigh--what I have so far, they are nothing like Tinkerbell pixies. Except slightly mischevious. Right now what I've got is a hive mentality, no verbal communication, and a vague idea of what they look like physically...I'll get back to you ; )

Thanks, Mary! And I'm glad you gave up. I couldn't handle the competition or devastation when you got a million dollar book deal AND everyone loved your blog.

Weeelll the thing about Pixie Warrior is that it was researched fairly well.

If you read the Wikipedia entry on Pixies, the novel is referenced several times.

I do not know how popular the book is, but I consider the author the Pixie Expert, if there could be such a thing.

I love pixies. I have no idea why.

Kiersten said...

Excellent, Anthony. I may check it out then.

And I hope I can live up to your love of pixies!

Anthony said...

If you wrote a pixie book you would be my BFF!

Congrats. This is sortof like getting published. Way to go....& I eagerly look forward to more pixie/pony adventures to come.

You'll make a book-reader of me yet! I admit that the only reading I've done besides textbooks in the last oh, 10-12 years are magazines. :P (I'm still a HP virgin- shhhh) But I'm really liking your style!

Ashley said...

I love it!

Kiersten said...

Anthony--excellent. I can always use more bffs.

Aunty Em--gosh, that makes it sound like a movie my four-year-old would be watching. IS watching, as a matter of fact. Did you know they do live-action My Little Pony shows? F R E A K Y.

Oh no, McWife! You totally need to read YA--they are fast, fun, entertaining reads, and the writing is phenomenal in some of them. Or you can just wait until I get an agent and get published, and read all of my books ; )

Thanks, Ash ; )

Horses, pixies, young love, great writing. You've got the magic combination there.

Maybe if you start early but end early, then you'd still be writing a 50,000 word book in 30 days and half of it would be in November. Depends on how far you think the rules can be stretched for you and you still be comfortable with yourself. It's not like you're getting graded on this one, after all.

Or, if your writing style involves plotting and outlining, you could do that, though the spirit of the NaNoWriMo lies more in the freeform style, I think.

I'm hooked! Can I read this one when you're done too? Tim just read an Orson Scott Card book called Enchantment. (It has nothing to do with pixies of course) He loved it and I'm starting it today so I was just wondering.

Kiersten said...

Of COURSE! I actually just started writing last night, so it'll be a few weeks, but I'll send it your way when I'm done ; )

I can't wait to see you guys at Christmas.
